The three sources, and what each actually costs

1. OEM exchange, new.This is the manufacturer selling you a new tube assembly against your defective one as a core return. It carries the OEM's premium and full traceability. 2. Independent refurbished / low-use.The secondary market for CT tubes is genuinely deep — this is one of the most commonly stocked parts in the independent service world, with same-day shipping available from multiple U.S. warehouses for the common platforms. Published market pricing (Block Imaging's CT Tube Price Guide, January 2026) puts used low-use tubes at $35,000–$40,000 USD and used moderate-use tubes at $20,000–$25,000 USD, both against a core exchange, with warranty terms that shrink as usage rises. Expect 90-day prorated coverage at the lower end and full 6–12 month coverage on newer, lower-use units — ask for it in writing.

3. Independent new / third-party manufactured. Manufacturers such as Dunlee and Varex build new tube assemblies engineered as drop-in replacements for the major CT platforms, typically with a 12-month full warranty. Published pricing for this tier runs roughly $30,000–$50,000 USD— well under OEM-new while carrying a real warranty. For most operators who aren't contractually locked to OEM parts, this is the best value tier.

What drives the spread inside each tier

  • Model and heat-load rating.A 6.3 MHU tube on an older platform prices differently than the higher heat-load tubes on current-generation scanners. Confirm the exact part number and dash variant against your scanner's system ID before quoting anything — cross-compatible tube families have insert- versus assembly-level variants that are easy to mismatch.
  • Usage on the replacement unit.For refurbished tubes, the mAs count (a rough proxy for remaining life) and date of manufacture move price more than any other factor. A tube with documented low usage costs more than a “tested, working” unit with unknown history — and should.
  • Exchange versus outright.Exchange pricing runs well below outright pricing across every tier — often by $10,000 or more. If your core can't be returned (destroyed tube, contamination, non-standard configuration), budget for the outright price.
  • Warranty. This is where the real price-per-dollar-of-risk comparison happens.   • Manufacture date and usage (mAs counter) on the replacement unit, in writing.
  • Warranty term and structure — full versus prorated, and from what date it starts.
  • Install labour included or separate, and how many hours are budgeted.
  • Total landed cost — tube, freight, brokerage and labour as one number, not a parts quote you'll add to later.
